It just sort of happens. I find myself in the mood for miniature painting. Some of it is for games I play, others just to relax and, perhaps, improve the quality of the end results. In any case, I never really plan to paint in bursts. Yet, here I am. For the second year in a row, I’ve started painting like mad.
365 Day Challenge
No. Just, no. I have no intention of painting one miniature per day for 2022. That said, as of January 31st, I already have 48 miniatures painted for the year. That is 13% of the way to success! Only 317 more to go!
I have a fairly full life. Family, work, photography, gaming, and miniature painting, pretty much in that order. Clearly, having any attempt at painting that many miniatures can easily be derailed.
Why Miniature Painting?
As mentioned in a recent post, I started role-playing at a young age. Figurines on the table were used to represent who and where we are within context of the game. At first, it was just cool stuff to collect and paint. Over time, it became a zen-like meditation of paint application. It is an escape from reality that provides entertainment in other venues. It also inspires my imagination.
Is it weird? Not as weird a hobby as it used to be, but still not as cool as shot glasses or tourist spoon collections, perhaps. But it is also more involved than just dropping change on a counter and putting the goods in a display case.
The bottom line here is that I enjoy miniature painting. It is a creative process that keeps the grey matter moving and tries the eyes. The question is whether or not I’ll hit 365 painted miniatures this year?
I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
In the January photo included with this post, almost all of the figurines are from Reaper Miniatures, many of them from their Kickstarter campaigns. Painting the townsfolk in the front row were both quick and fun. The bear is from Critit while the six terrain pieces are from the now defunct MegaCon games.
There are plenty of good miniature companies out there. If you’re not in the hobby but interested, let me know what you’re looking for and I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction.
Need some product photography? Some of this project is geared towards honing my skills in that arena as well! Let’s talk!
