Aesthetic Architecture of OKC

The Gold Dome

After writing about the Urban Archaeologist, it seems fitting to share a pair of favorite structures in Oklahoma City. These two buildings dominate the intersection of NW 23rd and Classen in Oklahoma City. I am overdue for another early morning visit. I love the sunrise aesthetic. When paired with two characterful structures, it can be a wonderful way to start the day.

The Classen

The Classen

Originally known as Citizens Bank Tower, The Classen is a 21 floor structure standing 273 feet tall. Recently remodeled, it is now the third tallest residential building in Oklahoma City. If the hexagonal design doesn’t get your attention, perhaps the narrow base will. Designed by Robert Roloff, it has an aesthetic similar to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Perhaps, under different circumstances, I would enjoy calling this tower home. From the upper floors, I could probably see where I used to office.

The Gold Dome Aesthetic

The Gold Dome was the fifth geodesic dome constructed in the world. Made up of 625 panels the dome spans a 145 foot diameter circle. Beneath is an interior of some 27,000 square feet. It has served as bank, cultural center, art gallery, office space, and a restaurant over the years. Consistent efforts to breathe new life into the building keep faltering. Ownership seems to change every few years. I haven’t kept up with the latest news, but the last I heard was a conversation about turning it into a concert venue.

Where Does the Future Lie?

With recent changes, it appears that The Classen will be going strong for some time. I would appreciate any word of the current plans for the Gold Dome. These structures are iconic symbols on this colorful intersection. I have enjoyed exploring this general area and it is hard to imagine the neighborhood without this pair of buildings.
