One of the challenges I have found entertaining over the years is seeking publication. No, my work hasn&#8217;t been on the cover of Vogue, Sports Illustrated, or the New York Times. If you watch the magazine rack at your local book store, though, you may occasionally find my work hiding inside the pages of some of my favorite magazines like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behindtheshutter.com\/shutter-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shutter Magazine<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlifedepartment.com\/outdoor_oklahoma.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outdoor Oklahoma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Models who are seeking publication often approach me. Today, I want to share a few important tips that will help you achieve this goal.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is far easier to select a publication and shoot a set specifically for it than it is to try and find the right publication for something you&#8217;ve already created. Where are you hoping to be published? Study the magazine and make a plan to compliment what is already appearing within it&#8217;s pages.<\/li>\n<li>Subject matters. This should go without saying, but I&#8217;ll say it anyway. Submit the right images to the right magazine. Swimwear does not get published in a typical bridal magazine.<\/li>\n<li>Quality matters. A magazine is going to want images that will look good in print, even if they are a digital-only publication. These days, a smartphone camera does a pretty good job, but you still need to make sure the image is sharp, crisp, and clean.<\/li>\n<li>Find a good team to work with you. We all know you look great as soon as you crawl out of bed. Hair and makeup should still get special attention when you are trying to get published. Add in a solid stylist and a fine photographer who understands what the magazine is looking for and you up your odds considerably.<\/li>\n<li>Exclusivity is important. Everyone loves behind the scenes photos. It is hard not to share all the fun you are having with your friends, family, and fans. Most magazines worth their salt are more than happy for you to share as well, <em><strong>after they have published your images<\/strong><\/em>. Keep any photographs related to your publication submission private until they are published.<\/li>\n<li>It is bad form to submit images to two or more publications at once. You want your work to be original. So does the magazine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hopefully this will help get you started in the right direction.
