If you have been in Oklahoma very long, you&#8217;ve at least heard of it. If you&#8217;ve lived here all your life and have never visited, you may be an anomaly. Consider this your formal invitation from a lifelong Sooner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-795\" src=\"https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2018_WMWR-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Prairie Dogs in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2018_WMWR-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2018_WMWR.jpg 720w, https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2018_WMWR-640x427.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While I had visited the refuge before, it was photography that really unlocked the beauty of this place. No, it is not Alaska, Yellowstone, or Yosemite with their majestic views. Then again, none of those places are quite like the Wichita Mountains. Each of these places is unique and special. For Oklahoma, this one is ours.<\/p>\n<p>I have seen a wide variety of animal life in the park. The prairie dogs always make for an interesting visit. I&#8217;ve seen plenty of bison and a few white-tailed deer. I once watched a coyote run through the tall grass carrying the leg of a recent kill. Collared Lizards and American Kestrel are always fun to spot. All of this and more can be found in the 59,020 acres. The combination of open prairie, forest, and rocky outcroppings make it a place worth checking out.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-797\" src=\"https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2016_WMWR-2-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"Greater Blue Heron in Medicine Park\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2016_WMWR-2-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/markgunterphotography.com\/abo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/W_MGP2016_WMWR-2.jpg 556w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I do not want to give too much away for those who have never been. Those who have visited would have their own tales to share. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is a rugged gem full of life and sprinkled with history. It is a day-long trip that will help you clear your head. Get away for a while. Go to the top of Mt.
